Projected Projects > "Plan B"

*sigh* I've been having a bitch of a time computing these past two days. It began yesterday morning on Thursday around 6 a.m. when we suffered a brownout. Luckily I've my system working on an APC UPS so when the brownout occurred I had enough time working off of battery power to shutdown my system and avoid any damage in that way. But the brownout seemed to exacerbate a situation with my hard drive. I think it's dying. I've noticed something of a problem during start-up that I thought wasn't much of anything, for about the past two weeks. But now it seems to be an indication that my hard drive is looking to give out soon. I was completely offline yesterday and most of today because of it. I had access to the Net thanks to Narcissus, but he wasn't fully charged so I had to use him sparingly. Thankfully my brother stopped by tonight and let me borrow his AC adapter/charger... so if worse comes to worse and my hard drive does die out, I'll still have access to the Net via my iPod touch. But the shitty thing about that, as any touch owner will know, is that it's a neutered version of the Net thanks to the touch's inability to play most Flash content and some javascript issues. The main gripe I have is not being able to post from Blogger on the touch. I would've made my post yesterday, as usual, but I had no way to do so. :(

So the next few days or couple of weeks are going to be interesting. My hard drive is going to die. It's inevitable. The writing's on the wall. I've been through this before, more times than I would like, so I know the signs... it's only a matter of time. Thankfully I've made all the truly critical back-ups I need to make. The next few days will be about backing up the minor things that'll make transitioning to a new system a bit easier. It looks like I'll be working off a start-up disk on an external hard drive once the internal one gives out. So I'm gonna try and set that up as soon as possible. Anyway, the point of all this is that I probably won't be making my daily posts on the Dead Letter Room... but that doesn't mean I'll be abandoning the project. I'm gonna do what I can to keep up. I'm gonna blog as usual, I just won't be able to upload anything for days at a time... maybe. I'm not sure. Maybe there won't be an interruption. And maybe there will... I just don't know. But I'm sooo close to the finish line that there's no way I'm gonna give up on this year-long experiment. I gotta keep going. I'm not gonna let a little thing ( :P ) like this get in the way of its completion. But it's gonna be a little shaky. ;) Here's hoping all goes well. :)

Projected Projects > "I Think I'm A Mother"

The title's a bit extreme, but I've always wanted to use it. :P It's the title of one of my favorite songs, I Think I'm A Mother by PJ Harvey off her 1995 album, To Bring You My Love. It's not really in keeping with the spirit of this particular post, but I am about to become a mother... so in some respect it is apt. ;)

I've had this project in mind for almost three years now. It was around that time that I got my hands on a special edition of Tori Amos' 2005 album, The Beekeeper. Included in the set was a package of wildflower seeds called The Beekeeper Mix. The hook being a means to further connect with the message/spirit of the album by becoming a gardener. There's this idea that our relationships and our lives are like gardens. The watchword is commitment. We tend to get into trouble whenever we neglect our gardens. The weeds, while necessary, do need tending to. Overlooking the problem(s), losing ourselves in denial can wreak havoc on a garden. It's important not to lose control and remain vigilant in keeping things healthy. It's hard and it takes work, but it can be achieved. Though, that's not to say an overgrown garden is necessarily a bad thing... some people need that chaos. But there's a hope that people can at least distinguish what is unhealthy. It's important to moderate and keep things in balance. Gardening keeps you in tune with the chemistry of balance. A garden is a reflection of the gardener. And I'm curious to see what kind of gardener I turn out to be.

One of my fondest memories of childhood was a project I had in elementary school. I believe it might have been in second or third grade. We were given the task of raising a lima bean, so to speak. I don't remember what they even become... but I remember the excitement of giving life to something. Something organic. In a lot of ways we're all mothers and fathers. Connecting with that energy has always been consigned to my art. A lot of what goes on there has a lot to do with the Mothering and Fathering principles. But there's something... different about giving life to something organic. It's in no way more profound. My spirituality holds a rock in the same regard as a human. But the organic is intrinsically more dynamic and engaging. It's so haphazard and fragile. It's the stuff of spontaneity. It also takes less work on the part of the audience to appreciate the wonder of being; you know life when you see it in that form. So it's merely a reference to things I'm already in tune with on a metaphysical level. Rearing these creatures is a physical manifestation of that thinking, like my art. But again, it's just different. And I... again... this has been in the works for some time. Longer than the aforementioned three years. I want to bring that childhood memory to life again. I want that... that everyday back and forth in the beginning; the anticipation of life. The constant attention you give and tending you do when you want to spark something. Then the payoff of seeing that frail little stalk break the earth and breathe the air and bask in the light of day. Which is followed by the upkeep and maintenance... and also the fear of death. It's the whole of process that I'm in love with, the idea of it. It's all encompassing.

The floodgates opened earlier this year when I fell into my Pom Tea obsession. As much as I fell in love with the drinks themselves, I was also taken by the bottles they came in. They're beauties of design, so elegant and minimalist. I found it very hard to throw them away, so I saved a lot of them. I kept them around thinking I'd have some use for them. This was odd, given how much shit I throw around whenever I see people cling to things they don't immediately use or need. But again, they're just so beautiful... it would've been a crime to throw them away. So it wasn't long after I had them that the idea came to use them as vases. I could see it in my mind's eye. It looked beautiful. As I held onto those bottles, waiting; I also held onto those seeds, waiting. Waiting for the right time. And that was it. All the pieces were in place and a vision was formed. It was a... a practical expression of the evolution of my thoughts to paper. It was very organic, very seamless. Kismet.

So I'm gonna give this a go, not knowing where it will go. I hope it turns out well. I come from an agrarian ancestry, so I'm sorta hoping that genetic memory kicks into high gear. :P But I don't really have any fears. And I'm not about to obsess about the project either. I'm not gonna do any crazy research. I'm not gonna buy any crazy soil. I'm not going to use any crazy liquid supplements. I want the whole of this thing to be organic and natural. I wanna get my hands dirty old school. Water, soil and light is all I'll need. I'm gonna see what I can make of it on my own... on the fly. I'm gonna become the gal who gets knocked up not knowing a lick about raising a child. I'm gonna dive into this fearlessly and foolishly. I mean... life is happening all the time without any intervention, I'd have to imagine if I threw these seeds to the wind they'd come to bear on their own... eventually. How hard can it be? Lets hope not much.

So yeah, I'm excited about this one. I've nine (the goddess number) bottles set aside for this thing, but I'm gonna start out using only one. If all goes well, I'll have them all going together... hopefully by the end of the year. I'm... I need this. I'm so disengaged from the natural order and flow of things. I need to be engaged. My hope is that... well... I just need this. So I hope this works out. Wish me luck. ;)

Projected Projects > "Lost Again, Last Lameout"

Okay, still a little sick. So I'm kinda laming out on this one. :P But I promise this will be the last of my lame sick-posts since I expect to be 100% either tomorrow or in the following few days. ;) Let's hope I don't contract Ebola anytime soon. ;) Anyway, I'm feeling particularly lame since I have a huge large pepperoni pizza from Red Brick that I'm sure to polish off all on my lonesome and a huge vat of Nestea Raspberry Iced Tea. :D :D :D I'm very happy and gluttonous tonight. ;) So yeah, last night I began watching the third season of Lost on DVD. I finished Disc 1 and I plan to get through all of 'em before the premiere... next week? I'm sure I can do it. Nothing big. But I felt I should post about something. :P Later later folks...

Projected Projects > "Code"

This one you could consider a New Years resolution. Although it's something that's been kicking around in the back of my head for some time. For almost two years actually. Gee, maybe even three? I'm such a whore when it comes to timelines. Okay, no, yeah... just over two years, coming up on the third. On my 24th birthday I was dying to get my hands on a brand spanking new copy of O'Reilly's HTML & XHTML - The Definitive Guide by Chuck Musciano & Bill Kennedy. One night, some time before my birthday, while my brother, Mom and I were out in Long Beach we stopped over at a Barnes & Noble and my Mom answered my prayers. That night I walked away with a new O'Reilly animal book of my very own, my first in fact. It was a very special night and a very special gift. I loooved it and love it still. Though you wouldn't know it based on observation. :(

I think the hallmark of any great gift is the amount of use derived from it. If that were the case, you might say my O'Reilly book is pretty shitty. But it's not! That assessment speaks more of me and my motivation than anything else. I'm glad that I have it and you'd have to kill me to pry it away from my hands, but sadly I've let it languish. It's horrible. I feel such guilt about it. There's so much potential there, in the book and me. We need each other. Apart we're just sorta empty. But I want us both to sing. I craved the thing for a reason. The spark is there and I want to learn but I've been in such a... I've been in this place. I've been moving out of it. Baby steps.

Anyway, I think I'm ready. As I've said before, this year the watchword is change. I want to light a fire under my ass and get this project going. For the longest time I've wanted to code and I felt that HTML and I were made for one another. I realize that it's old and in some sense on the precipice of obsolescence but it's where I want to go. There's this charm about the old, especially in tech. I very much like the idea of getting my feet wet with something most people in my situation are passing up. It's more practical to learn something more useful and popular at the moment. But I'm not about that. I want to go back. I want to see how things were. It's just the way my mind and heart work. I want to start at the beginning. So that's where I'm starting.

Also, given the new year I've been thinking what a... well I have a domain and the web space, a gift courtesy of my wonderful brother. So it's there. It's all there. I have the means. I have the mind, I have the hands, I have the heart, I have the keyboard, I have the machine, I have the book, I have the domain and I have the space. It's all there. Do you realize how many people would kill for that? And I'm just letting it collect dust. I feel like shit about that. So when the new year came around I was in the mindset of renewals and I kept thinking about the domain upkeep and I thought about how horrible it was that it got no use last year. None of it. It all just sat there, because of me. I'm the catalyst. It could've been different. I could've had something. Anything. Well I promise to have that this year. For the most part, the most important resolutions I keep to myself and follow through on. Those I'm shaky about and need some help with I throw into the light. I wanted to share this so there was some sort of accountability. It'd be quite sad if this time next year I had nothing to show for it. But it's out there now and I promise to have something to show for it.

Projected Projects > "Change"

New year! Usually means resolutions of some kind. I made specific ones last year. It's something I do ever year. This blog and my whole dive into the social sphere of The Net being a holdover from the last. I have things in mind for this year, but I'm not really about to proclaim them to the world. Frankly, there's too much going on in my head at the moment. There's plenty to do. Plenty I need to do. Like any resolution, they're all rooted in change. So for now that's my resolution. To change. I fear about getting specific 'cause I have a real problem with people saying they're gonna do something and not following through in the end. I hate talk. Or rather, I prefer action to talk in this context. I've made the mistake before of talking and not doing. I don't do that so much anymore, if at all, and I don't want to start again. If I say I'm gonna do something, I'm gonna do it. Making a change I'm sure is too general. But as I've said, there's a lot to choose from. But something's gonna happen this year... you can bet on it.

Projected Projects > "Updates I"

While I was trying to decide what to blog about today I started to think of all the features I had at my disposal. Then I thought it might be time for a Projected Project. But then I seriously started to think about how I hadn't really got anything going. So I just checked the archives and surprisingly, I'm doing quite well. But before I go adding another project to the heap I thought I'd give an update on everything I have in the air so far.

The first thing I ever really mentioned was trying to learn the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard layout. I'm quite happy to report that I'm pretty much a pro-typer again. ;) Well, I don't know... I'm not quite as fast as I used to be. Not normally. But every now and then I feel myself blazing past any previous speed records I held before. I think what I really need to do is get back to the routine of practicing, using the website I first did when I was getting a handle of the key positions: ABCD - A Basic Course in Dvorak. I really only learned the Home Row and got used to the rest of the key positions over time. I didn't drill them into my mind the same way I did when I was first learning to use QWERTY. On that note, I've just about forgotten everything I knew about the QWERTY layout. That's not a good thing. I wanted to be able to use both layouts with equal ease. But to truly learn Dvorak I had to dedicate several weeks to not using QWERTY. So now you might say my next mini-project will be to familiarize myself with QWERTY again. Let's hope all goes well.

I also mentioned uploading photos to Flickr. I had a pretty good run of steady uploads for a while and then I kinda just stopped. I get lazy. Or rather something else comes along that draws my attention and I forget about everything else for a while. Luckily I built a routine I'm comfortable using when it comes to doing the uploads. My main problem was getting a handle on the tagging, since I wanted them to be as comprehensive as possible. I think I nailed that system. I just need to get back into it again. Hopefully I'll max out my upload limit this month. That'll be my goal. ;)

Speaking of tagging, I also mentioned tagging all my posts to get this blog organized. I've been totally lax there. My plan was to tag as I posted. Which I have been doing. But I also had planned to tag past months posts, once a month. I never got that going. :P I've been real bad. I totally dropped the ball here. So I really need to get on that.

Thankfully I made time for this post 'cause I more or less forgot what I had on my plate and I now I have a clear picture of what it is that I really need to take care of. So that's it. I'm not doing too bad. Though, I'm glad I didn't add anything else today. In fact, I need to shake some things up. Change my routine in a few other areas. Specifically the blogosphere. I need to get Google Reader in shape. I've been keeping up with all the new items and that's precisely the problem... I've subscribed to too many feeds. I need to cut back on some of my subscriptions to allow time to read and do other things. I've been tethered to this machine a bit too much these days. I'll consider that another mini-project. ;)

Projected Projects > "The Keyboard"

I'm not talking about a computer keyboard today, rather a musical keyboard. I've been dying to play the piano for the longest time. The urge has been serious for the last several years, not just a passing thought. I suppose that began when my mother bought me an electronic keyboard to fiddle around with. Sadly, it hasn't gotten much use. I made the effort to learn for a while, but I kinda got off track. Well more than kinda, I just plain gave up. I'm not sure why. I still have my Piano For Dummies book in hand and the keyboard's still in good working order so there's really no excuse not to be playing. So I'm saying that I'm gonna get back on the horse again, so to speak. I'm hoping to be halfway proficient with the keyboard by the end of next year. I'm sorta setting my sights a little low, I know. :P But I think it's a much better idea to visualize something smaller, something you can attack. I'm also not promising that I'll learn the thing. I think it's horrible to say you'll do something and never get around to it. All I'm saying is that I'm gonna make a concerted effort to try. That's all. I'm gonna try to play the piano again. Hopefully it works out this time.

A huge motivator for learning to play the keyboard is being able to compose my own music. I'd have to say that the piano is my favorite musical instrument of all time, save for the human voice of course. I just love the sound. I love the aura about them as well, just everything. The instrument itself is endlessly fascinating. It's so mechanical. It's an interesting amalgamation of wood, wire, and metal. In reality it seems very much ahead of its time... in terms of its design anyway. Almost appears to be an analog computer in fact. Best of all, the design is so amorphous. There's the standard piano then there are the uprights, harpsichords, organs, keyboards, etc. There's such a beautiful array of options for this sound and technique. At once, it's simple and complicated. Just the way I like things. ;)

But anyway... my hope is to one day create musical pieces to accompany my art when I'm competent enough to move it into the animated space. But that vision in and of itself is sooo far from my mind right now. I'm going to concentrate on what I know how to do, and then see how I can work in something new. So that's what I'm gonna try to do. Learn this beast. Get a handle of this new animal. I'm not at all what you would call a musician... my experience with art has always been visual, but I'm hoping I can get a taste of that other world. I need to create an experience... that's all my own. Here's hoping I'm on my way to making that happen. Wish me luck! ;)

Projected Projects > "Run"

Yup that's it. I need to run more. :P I did quite a bit of runnig today and boy was it a rude awakening. I'm torn up right now. :( My quads ache like a mofo... my throat burns... me knees are in shambles. It's a sorry sight. I'm just dead tired right now. It's a clear sign that I need to get back to that old passion of mine. I'd write more... but I feel... ugh, I just wanna rest! :P Forgive me. ;)

Projected Projects > "Tagging And More Tagging"

Ahhh... tagging. The watchword of the world of metadata. Tagging: data about data. It can be such a source of strength and weakness. It's incredibly powerful when implemented correctly. It allows us to dive through vast amounts of data to find exactly what we need. What we want, when we need it. In a world that's ever expanding, tags and tagging are become more and more vital. Implementation, however, is still the one Achilles heel in this system. For the time being, this is by and large, a manual process. And if you're at all familiar with The Digital, manual is a tough pill to swallow when you've become accustomed to a world of automation. Tagging in itself is its only barrier, because it's so daunting to undertake. For the most part we eschew the system. But I'm not going to avoid it any longer. It's time to make another change.

So I'm going to attempt to tag all of these posts from now on to make searching this blog not such a pain in the ass. I'm going to bring order to the chaos. But I'm not making the change for the benefit of future posts. This change in retroactive. I'm going to attempt to tag all of the posts I've published thus far. All 114 of 'em. But it's going to take a while. I don't plan to get this done in a day, of even a few weeks... my plan is to attack the problem bit by bit over an extended period of time. Going full tilt seems too daunting and discouraging and could possibly put me off of the project. So I'm gonna do what I can, when I can.

So why even post about this? Well, it means I get to cheap out on a post. :P But more than that, having something set down in print kinda puts my ass to the fire. I've said I'm gonna do it, so now I'm gonna be held accountable. Maybe not by you, but by my internal Tag Nazi. And it shouldn't be hard. I started tagging my Flickr photos... well I've always been doing that, but I've gone to an extreme with those set of tags. And one of the things I learned about them is that they can always be refined. I think the main inhibitor working against me is my Perfectionism Strain. I kinda wanna get it right from the beginning. I want the system to be complete from the outset. I feel I should be aware of every possible tag I may ever want to use in the future before I begin the process. But that's crazy. I'm gonna just suss out what categories I can already see forming and work from there. Just getting the features in order will be good enough for me. So you can look forward to some order on this blog in the coming days and weeks. Hope you enjoy it. ;)
